It's pathetic, political correctness gone mad.

My children watch Tom and Jerry and we have all seen the episodes in question. My children still don't want to smoke.
What is the difference between my children seeing it on television as opposed to seeing it in reality when they walk out the door? The only purpose in banning these was to bring the world one step closer to banning all types of smoking period.
It is time that people with some common sense stand up in ALL countries, not just the US (I'm American) and tell the censoring idiots to find something better to do with thier lives.
This is social control on the rise. We need to stop it before it reaches the top.
Oh, and with Winston Chruchill's first name also being the name brand of a cigarette, perhaps their next step will be to change his name just as Nascar changed from the Winston Cup to the Nextel Cup. Winston Churchill without a cigar? Please. He's no longer Winston Churchill then he is?

Its a real shame but the scenes with cigars, if memory serves correctly, shows Tom getting more and more greener and sick the more he trys to smoke jerry out. I guess then the PC brigade has shot itself in the foot, by banning the smoking scenes they aren't encouraging smoking but neither are they disencouraging it leaving the kid watching to fall prey to possibly the same thing but from another source. Besides, the fact that its a cigar not a ciggarette would also mean that all this would have achieved in the long run is the slighlty reduced sales of cigars 20 years from now!
All this may have something to do with the fact that Sony pictures owns MGM now and wants to keep its family friendly image, arguably the last studio with a pair of balls between its legs( MGM that is)

I think it's ridiculous that they changed the scenes in Tom and Jerry where they were smoking. It is not society's job to raise kids and teach them right from wrong or what to do or not to do. The companies should feel comfortable knowing that a child can watch a CARTOON scene where a CARTOON CAT is smoking and know that a) the child understands that it's not real and b) that their parents have raised them well enough and taught them to know that it's not healthy to smoke.
But I guess it just go to show that the society that we live in relies too heavily on the media raising our children.

The Tom & Jerry situation is inexcusable nonsense. It amounts to unjustifiable censorship in my opinion.
What happened to Mel Smith is different. He was allowed to appear to be smoking as I recall. I think hes used a stage cigar. This is not the same as cutting out any reference to smoking, it's simply an unfortunate side effect of the smoking ban.

I think its so stupid!! We have become a society bent on hidden secrets and abolishing everything that is not perfect.Come on ...its a cartoon....its a classic one too! Some of the best stuff from over the years has been censored or banned.....for what??? We are all adults and we can decide what is cool or offensive and simply change the channel or turn the other cheek.Remember the old speedy Gonzalez series.....off the air???

AHA!! Thats why I smoke! I watched Tom & Jerry as a kid. I gotta get a good law firm asap. Then they can run lawsuit commercials targeting smokers who watched Tom & Jerry as a kid, and we can all get wealthy! The lawsuit lottery!
In reality, that is so stupid, we all make choices. The lack of personal resposibility in our culture at this point is disgusting in my opinion.

If we're so concerned about the impact of [cigar] smoking upon children, we should think even more about the effects of "Itchy and Scratchy" violence.

I think it's stupid censorship is what I think.
This country is slowly becoming so politically correct that it's disturbing.
It is impossible to create an environment where nothing offends no one, people in general will find something wrong with EVERYTHING.

its stupid. kids see people all around them smoking all the time. ok, smoking is a bloody, idiotic, stupid, imbecilic thing to do, but any parent with half a brain will tell their child this, so why ban them? how many kids go around bashing kitchen utensils over other kids' heads? do you blame it on the program? no. you blaim the kids' violent nature. i watched it all the time as a kid. it was one of my favourites. i don'y smoke, never have, and never will, becuase i use my brains. teach a kid how to use their brains and neither will they.
