I am so computer illiterate. I am starting a new job and after running a test on my computer, they are saying that my computer is at 224 RAM and it needs to be 256 RAM. What do I need to do?

Ok, first off, it's not the drive. Ram comes in chips that you install onto the motherboard. The weird thing is that it comes in preset units, and the only unit near 224 is 256. It might be damaged.

2-4-16-32-64-128-256-512-1024 are the preset units. You can mix and match, though the standard on most machines is 256. I'd go with the 512 or 1024 myself, but you probably don't have that much demand on your system.

It sounds like you need to take the comp into a professional. Ram is fairly cheap these days, so it shouldn't be a problem. Just buy

There are probably 4 memory cards in your comp:
64 + 64 + 64 + 32 or it could be:
128 + 64 + 32

To increase it from 224 to 256, take out the 32Mb card and put in a 64Mb. I would consider bumping it up to 512Mb though, it shouldnt cost you more than about $50.

Spend $400 and start with a new computer. My guess is the ram is only going to be one area you'll need to upgrade in the near future. By the time you get everything you need current, you will have spent enough to buy the new computer.

Chuck is correct, you probably have 32mb of RAM being used for video. By getting a video card, that shared memory would be freed up. But while you're at it, I'd suggest upgrading the RAM by replacing a couple of chips- take the machine to a computer store, they will able to handle this for you easily.

you need to upgrade you RAM. you should (upgrade)have a 512 MB RAM. you RAM as of now have will be of size 256 MB where some initial memory will allocated for use of OS. so it reduce the RAM size. there is no RAM size as 224 MB.

To start with, know that RAM and hard drive space, although both sometimes measured in megabytes, are different. It sounds to me as though you are speaking about RAM, not hard drive space. If that is so, then you must add some memory hardware to your PC. Memory chips are usually not very expensive.

You obviously are computer illiterate. A hard drive has disk space. RAM is electronic memory, which is entirely a different thing.

When submitting PC questions try to include the model and make.

Otherwise people are just guessing. You may consider resubmitting your question or editting it.

yeah Chuck and CMan are right. what you can do is to lower the amount of shared memory your graphics memory of motherboard(if possible) in the bios settings. but be careful and please get some one who knows the job coz improper settins of bios can damage your computer
