.Net is a microsoft Openly available software development framework that merges Web application with Desktop Application..
.Net Combines a set of languages with the help of a set of standard classes and framework.
with .net u can work on any language of your choice that is .net compatible.
C# is the preferred language used for .net learning.

.NET is newer framework which allows you to make application which acn be run on any computer which is having .net framework....

.NET Framework allows you to write applications in various languages like, VB , C#(pronounced as C sharp) J# and more to be added in future. It is just not about webservices and web application(as somebody has answered)... It allows to make various type of application including simple windows desktop applications...And now developers who worked on Visual C++ are now working on this platform....
It is considered to be the future with no interoperability issues....Moreover Linux platform is also having similar mono project to execute application made on this .NET platform...
