The association that determines what the rating of a movie is hasn't made a decision on the rating yet. Typically, when a movie studio is making a movie, there is a certain rating they are shooting for. The ratings association tells them what needs to be taken out to assure that rating.
A lot of times when the movie is later released on video, the movie includes stuff that was taken out of the movie to assure the theatrical rating. Since the rating association didn't put a rating on the extra stuff, the video comes out as unrated.

all since people haven't REALLY explained it in there own words. Let me give it a try. You know the movie old school (the one with will ferrall) yeah to my knowledge (in canada terms) They didn't even try to rate it.. When it hit theatres it was the unrated version, making all the ushers ID everyone (I look over 18 and they still IDed, any ways off course) Like, the critics saw the trailer and were like... do we really have to rate this... would I really let my 15 year old son watch this??.. .NO... Not worth my time... Unrated. HAAHA!!! I just did some research on that movie and I saw an ad rating for unrated and out of control. So... rated means its alright I'll rate this so and so... but unrated use your judgement and bring some humor!!! I hope this helps ya!!!!

They have to submit the movie to the ratings board prior to theatrical release.
Unrated movies have footage that was not rated or was cut from the movie by the ratings board, often because it would not pass an R rating.

Rated movies can be anywhere from G to NC-17 (in the US, anyway), and can be anything from perfectly innocent to just barely making the cut to be able to be rated. Unrated movies are either too violent or sexual (or both) to garner even an NC-17 rating, or they may be foreign or indie films that did not have a widespread release.

All movies will have a rating when released. It's just that some studios want to see how the "hype" is building up before they place a rating onto it. Like the movie Snakes on a Plane. It was originally pg13, but after all the attention it got they redid some scenes and put an R on it.

Unrated movies have scenes no in the movies. Like in Badder Santa, there is a scene in a strip club that was no released in the theater. And in the Uncut Dukes of Hazard, they show breasts that are not in the theater version.

a rated movie can tell you why its rated PG for instance it mite be for crude humor and language... were as the a unrated version normally is worse as far as language, and just profane stuff... SO THE UNRATED ONES U DONT WANT TO SEE!

Most unrated movies have content that surpasses the NC-17 rating. Pretty much blockbusters 'soft porn' section.

Unrated ones have more extra footage that may change the rating, and the rated ones are the ones that were shown in the thearters.

From my understanding, if it was unrated, they had a hard time putting a rating on it because of innappropriate material.
