Carrie, no doubt this is going to be a challenging sort of culture shock, so being uncomfortable is to be expected, however it sounds like you are correctly applying the value such that you know that the income is more beneficial to your family needs at this time. If that is true then the discomfort will be short lived until you can get a vision of what might work best for you as you navigate this curve.
Options are vast for your needs I would suspect. Here are some off the top of my head.
1. Waitress: Probably easiest entry into this work force as the primary requirement is to be able to serve, and the better you are at service, the better income you make. You can make a lot of tips on a shift, which is rewarding, and essentially pick your hours (working morning and noon shifts for example so you are home for the kids. PRO: gets you back in the workforce, and you get rewarded for going the extra mile immediately, plus a level of flexibility you might not get in other environments. CON: Demanding, difficult sometimese thankless work.
2. Temporary office administration work. Agencies hire temporary work for maternity leaves and office projects. This can be as rewarding for you as the agency you work with. Pick the environment and project you want to work on. Less flexible in the office hours, but probably more aligned to your Health Administration goals down the road. PRO: was VERY rewarding for me when returning to the workforce after a difficult time! Gathers experience in administration that you can use for your ultimate goal, MIGHT even get you visibility into future Work from home responsibilities and gets you back in the workforce, but you may have to work your way up in assignments given the time away from the workforce-- I don't see this as a showstopper, but it depends on how YOU see it rather than me. :D CON: may not pay as much or be as flexible as a waitressing job.

Yes, I've been there and I agree with # 2. Waitressing is an over looked occupation. I had to struggle my way through when trying to get a degree after raising my kids and the only thing that seemed to work with school and family was the hospitality industry. I thought I would hate it but it turned out to be awesome. I found work where Professionals liked to lunch which yielded quick turnover of the tables and I made alot of tips, my paycheques went to the house and the tips helped pay for my books and clothing etc. I met alot of influential people as they were business people and when I was finished school I had a great network of people that were local as contacts. Through those contacts I got referrals for the business that I am in now (self employed) and made some great friends too. I don't know what I would have done otherwise as I really didn't have an up to date resume.
Good Luck to you

If you're open to the idea of bringing in additional streams of income working from the comfort of your own home, visit http://www.bedavis1.mywayout.net/ and watch the simple proven formula presentation that not only tells about the business but how it works too. While doing research, do check with the BBB (better business bureau) on any company you're looking at for legitimacy, ill complaints and ratings of the company. Robert Kiyosaki's book (from the Rich Dad Poor Dad) "The Business School" says this is the way to go!
Good luck on your endeavor!

This happens alot. I think that you can get a job doing admin work for a hospital or a clinic during the day which will help you understand some of the basics of how a hospital is run.I would also look on-line or in the newspaper to see if there were was job seeker group in your town. You may meet other mothers who are going thru the same things. You may want to join Clubmom- its free and they have a discussion board just for other moms like you: http://www.clubmom.com/jforum/forums/show/51.page?lastMid=204120&kid=6715&keyword=Getting%20Back%20To%20Work%20community.
I wish you the best.
