Classical conditioning is what's used to control involuntary behaviour. For example, Pavlov and his dog.... he rang the bell every time he fed the dog, and eventually the sound of the bell caused the dog to salivate. In humans the same thing can occur, when two stimuli are combined and produce an involuntary response, its a result of classical conditioning. It stemmed off into other types of therapies like desensitization therapies where for example if a person has a phobia, they would involuntarily become afraid and certain physical reactions would occurr and this is out of the persons control. With systematic desensitisation, the person would be gradulally introduced to the thing or situation that they are phobic of, first in very small incrimemnts in a safe setting, then gradually work up to a natural environment. Over time the person becomes desensitized to their fear and are able to face what used to terrify them without their past reactions occurring. This can be used for many things, including helping with agoraphobia, fear of animals or certain situations. It's been very successful. There is another type of desensitisation that is sometimes used, and is often successful but at the same time, initially very traumatic to the patient. This is called flooding. An example would be taking a person who is agoraphobic to a place that is very busy and full of noises and people and forcing them to remain in the situation until they are comfortable in the situation. There are many ways that humans use classic conditioning, but not so much for problems, more as an association...ex. a certain smell reminding them of a person or a place or event and depending on the memory the body will react to this either with endorphins and happiness, or with fear and racing heart and shaking if it reminds of a bad memory. Basically, classic conditioning can only be used to change a person's involuntary response to a stimulus.
