It's been rumored that Chuck Yeager took a peak into space in 1947 while flying the Bell X-1 when he first broke the sound barrier. Here's a quote from The Right Stuff:
The X-1 had gone through "the sonic wall" without so much as a bump. As the speed topped out at Mach 1.05, Yeager had the sensation of shooting straight through the top of the sky. The sky turned a deep purple and all at once the stars and the moon came out - the sun shone at the same time. ... He was simply looking out into space. ...

OFFICIALLY, Yuri Gagarin, but there has been a small and persistent rumor-- could be an urban legend, but you know what Stalin was like-- that the first man launched into space was a custodian who had been so unfortunate as to displease the Premier. Supposedly they assigned him to clean the capsule that a dog or chimp was supposed to be launched in and then locked him in it.
UNLESS you count the 'Man High' experiments done by the US in the late fifties, where a capsule was lifted above (most of) the atmosphere by helium weather baloons. At an altitude of over eighteen miles, it was effectively in vacuum. Not in free fall, though.

If earthlings include any species of animal, then it may have been Leica, a soviet german shepherd. There was no way to recover her (bring her back to Earth)... She died in space.
I believe there is a commemoration every year in respect to her.

The first 'earthling' was Lyca(a dog) if you include animals. If not, well, it was Yuri Gagrin(soviet cosmonaut).
