"Kindred" by Octavia Butler
It's a story about a young black woman living in the 70's traveling back in time to the antebellum south and having to live as a slave.
Before I read that book I always imagined that if I lived back then I would fight, but as the character is sowly reduced from strong willed to a slave, I realized everything my ancestors had to do just to stay alive. I've never read another book where the exact words seemed to fit. I feel like if that book was missing one word or one extra word was added it wouldn't be the same book. That's how powerful it was for me.

Every book influences me in some way. When I was a child, Black Beauty opened my eyes to mistreatment of animals, Bambi made me aware of the beauty of nature, Little Women taught me about family togetherness as well as independence. I think anyone who is a real reader probably feels that way.

Children and temper tantrums... The book “Fire Starter” by Stephen King has left me with a lasting and re-occurring impression. Whenever I see a child having a temper tantrum in public I can't help but imagine the people and things around the child not-so-spontaneously bursting into flames! :-)

Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenrich (sp?). It was a great book in which the author tried to get by on minimum wage in different jobs around the country and how she handled it. Lots of social insight.

that would have to be The Five People You Meet in Heaven. It made me realize that purhaps I have made a difference is someone's life and I don't even know about it. The way many people have made a difference in mine. I know it's wishful thinking, but its a beautiful book.
