Everywhere I go I seem to hear those damn aweful ringtones. Then when someone answers it,they seem to zone-out.This is especially worrying when they are behind the wheel of a car,or,worst still,a lorry. Why are we made to feel we can't get by in this world without one of these shinny plastic boxes of shite?

Yes Yes Yes! I hate mobile phones. cell phones what ever. No one needs a cell phone. People sat they need it for emergencies but I don't think walking around Wal-mart talking about your evening or who's dating who is an emergency. I especially don't want to hear details of you gyn doctor visit. People get a life. Detach yourself from your cell phones. I promise you won't die!

I can see your point, but I don't think the problem is the cell/mobile phone. It's the user of the phone!

The phones definitely serves its purpose. My husband owns a construction business and needs that phone in order to do estimates, get construction, and stay in touch with our family, especially when he has 15 hour work days!!

It's also a way to keep tabs on my daughter who is 14.

But for me, I have a cell phone and feel that it's important to pull over when placing a call. It may be possible to stay focused on traffic while talking, but not when you are looking at the keypad or fumbling for the phone.

Also, there is something known as a voice mail box. So if it's not a good time to be on the phone, becuase it might be distracting to others, LEAVE IT ALONE and put the phone on vibrate!!

I had a phone call come in once during church service and it was an automatic greeting. Nothing is more embarrassing than forgetting to turn the ringer off!

It's sort of like cigarettes. The addiction makes people behave rudely and inconsiderately of others (in some cases, that would be even more than they usually would ;-). Even the most considerate and otherwise well-mannered people will usually interrupt a conversation to at least check to see who a call or text is from.

They're probably dangerous to our health, especially to kids whose brains are still developing. Testing has not been adequate and certainly not over a (human) lifetime's use. The driving risks, of course, but it can be just as bad on the sidewalk, albeit at lower speed. :-)

They are the ultimate money-eater, sucking so much of our paychecks into a big corporate pocket. All the worse with costs to check voice-mail or call someone back if you're conscious enough to not answer once in awhile. As addictive as computer solitaire, so easy to click that do it again button.

Social implications are bizarre, we're in constant contact with people elsewhere and ignore those around us. (I'm a youth worker.) The loss of privacy and, more importantly, the loss of the willingness and ability to be alone. Not having one is a social handicap -- just a couple of years ago we all managed just fine without them -- and dating is close enough to impossible when textless.

Enough so that I felt compelled to give it a try when a colleague upgraded and gave me his old one. It was fun for a few days, but I couldn't afford to top it up when it ran out of credit. I stressed about that for a week and then realised that it was actually much less stressful without it, no worries about keeping it charged or checking for missed calls....

I used to be a theologian and am still an active observer of religion and anthropology -- so words like evil and the devil are professional terms to me. I will agree with the person above, with the stipulation that these are the tools of lifesucking corporations, who are generally so heedless to the well-being of people that they are evil.

Well that's my rant for the day. Have a good one.

The users can be quite discourteous, especially in theatres, restaurants and other places where attending people are annoyed. Also, some people use them incessantly to feel more important.

The phones can be used in good ways, such as an emergency or late change of plans, but to hang on them like a life line is indeed irritating.

I hate them and I finally got my first last Christmas. I held out until Hurricane Katrina destroyed all the land lines in my area and I realized the mobile phone does have some good uses. People were able to call out of the area after a few days with a mobile phone. I also broke down in my car out in the country and could call for help. I keep it turned off most of the time but carry it with me.

No I do not hate them .They can be very annoying at times
with some users stupid ring tones .
They are very useful however when checking on children and in
emergence's .In the U.K.it is illegal to use one while driving but of course there is always some idiots that ignore the Law .
The way forward would be to make the penalty's especially when driving much stiffer as it is very dangerous to use while
driving .

Well I`m glad to find out I`m not the only one that hates them. I think mobile phones create a lot of anti-social behaviour as many seem to be addicted to texting especially teenagers of today It is so annoying when in the middle of talking to somebody that person starts texting on their mobile

At the risk or sounding like a superstitious crank, I think the damned things are tools of the devil. If someone is so important that they have to be accessible at all times, they ought to be a heart surgeon or have the launch codes for the nuclear arsenal. House wive and truck (lorry) drivers don't qualify.

I don't hate the cellphones themselves, but the culture that comes associated to them. Like another person said, it's very useful in hurricanes and similar situations, like when you get stranded with your car in a lonely route. The technology is very useful.

What I hate about cellphones is, as you say, the annyoing ringtones, and the idea that we all need to be connected to others all the time!
Sometimes we need time to reflect, time to disconnect ourselves from the rest of society, time to be alone with our thoughts. What's the need in communicating to others *all* the time? To have stupid conversations such as "yeah, I'm in the bus...hahaha" ?

Cellphones are useful, for emergencies, for doctors, for people that actually need them. But not for schoolchildren, or for a constant adult use that only serves to bring money to the large corporations that manufacture them and then sell us their over-priced services, ringtones and other stupid customizations we don't really need.

I'm sorry, but I love mine. It's my only phone.
I dont use it in resturants, or when im out in public, I use it on vibrate, and I try not to bother people.
I deliver a lot in my job, and It is so much easier, especially if I cant find somebody's address or something.
I have family in different areas of Texas, and It is free to talk to them.
