They do tricks because it is a way of confusing the defence and getting past the other players. It also looks good when it works. For players that are not very experienced, it is very hard to do tricks because you have to concentrate on what you are doing and where you are going on court. NBA players don't always do tricks, only if they are in the lead by a long way or have an open court.

Actually, the term "trick" has different meanings and connotations. The dictionary gives 12 different meanings as a noun. 1 as a verb and 3 as adjectives.
So you might elaborate some on your meaning of the word "trick"

If you think about it, every sport is a circus(im a fan of most of them)
If people dont enjoy the show, they wont return, they wont buy tickets and players dont get paid. They do tricks for the crowd just like a circus.

In a proper game: To get past the defensive side and to get the crowd more uprising and cheering for them
Off court: If they can do tricks they might get more money because they have better skill and they might teach others.

Thye do tricks so they can fake out their defender....They would do a move that makes it seem like they are driving to the right when they are actually going left then step back n shoot or drive left.

its not about the crowd nor the money they do it cos they love the game! people spend hours or their lives practising and practising, they work hard they bring their own game up a level to do something that no one else can do and do it well earns a lot of respect not just from the crowd but the other players and your self. most players would play the game even if their was no crowed. just to play is the hole point of it!

its not to entertain, people on the playground do it, enen with NO crowd. its a way to put your personality into the game. basketball allows for this more than most sports.
