agree with most of the above answers, but understand that the tank always stays full. the liquid drains out of the tank into the drain field, as more sewage enters from the home. if your drain fields are working properly and you use a product like mentioned above to break down the solids you shouldn't have to have it pumped but every 8-10 years. some septic systems have dual tanks, ie. those requiring a pump station but most have only one.

The only real way to know is when it starts backing up in your home, the tub fills with feces, etc. It is recommended to pump it out every two years. However, If you have a system that is working properly with drainage feild lines that are adequate you could go years without having to pump it. I have a septic system that has been working fine for years. I haven't had to pump it in over 10 years.
I got worried a couple of years ago, and called around to get prices for pumping as a preventative measure. An old timer in the business was the one to tell me if I haven't had a problem it would be unlikely that I would have one anytime soon. I use RidX at least every other month if not monthly.
I could just be one of the lucky ones.

Just had my leech lines redone. The septic kept backing up in the bathtubs. Found out that tank should be pumped every 3-5 years. BUT if those nice septic tank pumpers had told us that there were two parts that needed to be pumped as in two clean-outs we wouldn't have any need for new lines. The back compartment was totally packed with solids. We didn't know that both should be cleaned, or that there even was two. Be sure they do both sides if you get it pumped, it'll save you $5000.

If you use microbial activators (Rid X, Septi Free, etc) you may avoid the need for pump outs.
A septic system operates on a 'digestive' system whereby it requires occasional maintenance of putting one of the products mentioned above to be installed every now and then.
I have answered several similar questions on this site. Do a search for those and read up on doing preventive maintenance on a septic system.
We have not had ours pumped out in 22 years. We do use the products mentioned above, and be wise about what you put down the drain. No grease, limited amounts of soaps & detergents, etc.

by the smell and puddle, or really moist ground, in your yard. Or you can call someone to come and pump it out. They should be able to tell you if its a blockage or if the tank is full.

You dont. Simply have it pumped regularly. Depending on size of it, and your family, could be annually.
