Actually years ago, it was more common to use wooden chairs, basically because that's what people sat in. A wooden chair would also smash into a number of pieces..very dramatic. A few years ago, the WWF (ie WWE) continued to use wooden chairs even though all the chairs at ringside were metal. It really seemed kinda silly that they would take the chair from under someone or from under the ring and (lo and behold) it was the only wooden chair in the building :-). For the person who replied that the chairs that are used are made of aluminum..well, take it from someone who has been in the business, they're not. They are regular steel chairs just like the ones everyone is sitting on. Taking and giving a chair shot is sort of "an art", although I don't suggest that you ever try it...In fact I'd advise you to not even think about it. It can be very dangerous as many things in this business can be if not done properly. The secret of a chairshot is that the flat part of the chair connects with the flattest part of the head. It looks a lot worse than it is, but again, you still feel it. And again it can be painful and potentially dangerous...AGAIN...DON'T ATTEMPT IT!!!!!

Steel chairs are used primarily due to the audible benefit they give to each fan in the arena and on TV. They were introduced into matches to keep them interesting in a period that weapons were introduced into matches full time due to rival companies wanting different styles of matches and getting different fanbases. However WWE has always been a family based programme so it could not fully use the weapons that other companies used so it compromised for its own benefit.

The reason the use steel chairs because it gives more of an impact when you hit your oppopents. Not that it hits them all the time.

some dont , but you generally use them in hardcore matches to inflict pain. or if your title is on the line and you hit your opponent with a chair and get disqualified, you dont loose your title.

because wooden would hurt to much and when they hit it wouldnt look right because they meant to make dents or something in it so it looks more "brutal" and it looks better then cracking out a wooden chair. and i guess they're cheap to replace.
