Metals are needed for the plant growth.
E.g.
Potassium -- regulates e opening and closing of the stoma by potassium ion pump
Calcium -- it is a part of cell walls. It also regulates transport of other nutrients into the plant
Magnesium -- it is an important part of chlorophyll and also important in the production of ATP through its role as an enzyme cofactor
Manganese -- necessary for building the chloroplasts

Plants need certain minerals to grow, just like we need vitamins. For example, if I recall correctly, chlorophyll contains magnesium, so if a plant was to grow in magnesium poor soil, it would probably not be very healthy. Read the label of a fertilizer container to find out the others!
