A-Rod is putting too much pressure on himself, I believe, to maintain the public's opinion of himself, his play, and his status on the team. Contrast that to Bobby Abreu, who slid right into the lineup and contributed without worrying about what people thought.

A-Rod is probably the best hitter in baseball. He hits for average and power, and also has a gun of an arm and can steal a base.

All his mental garbage is affecting his game adversely. He doesn't need to be the best statistical player on this team, or a leader on this team, or anything else but a solid 3B and the hitter he has always been. The guy can hit, if that's all he's focused on.

I think the absence of Matsui and Sheffield hurt A-Rod this year, because, in his mind, he felt he had to pick up some slack (that's what Jeter, Damon, Giambi, Abreu, Posada, et al are for). Trying hard is not the same as focusing on what you do well, and then doing that well, without worrying about the peripheral stuff.

Right now, with A-Rod, it's all peripheral. He needs to understand that the Yankees are great and have usually been great because they had a COLLECTION of solid players, not just one star. I think A-Rod will clear his head some in the offseason and get off to a better start next year. Let's not forget he was the league MVP last year, so you know he can perform with the best of them. I don't think Ortiz can do much for his team on the field, his bat just compensates for it. A-Rod is an all around player, and in order to succeed in NY, you gotta suit, play hard and repeat. A-Rod is making it more difficult on himself than it needs to be, and I'm surprised Torre hasn't interjected into the situation to calm the guy down a bit.

from a blog I read:

Coming into this game, A-Rod was batting .283 for the season.

But, he's batting .165 (in 79 ABs) against the Devil Rays and Orioles, combined, this year. If you take out what Alex has done against Tampa and Baltimore this season, then Rodriguez is batting .307 coming into this game - with a slugging average of .565 (according to my rough math) against everyone else.

I wish someone could tell A-Rod that he's only stunk against the D-Rays and the O's this season - and that, otherwise, he has nothing to be stressed about now. Maybe that would help him relax?

Because, right now, Alex's head is more messed up than Vlad Guerrero's hair on game day. If Rodriguez doesn't start to chill soon, he's going to end up acting like Brad Pitt in 12 Monkeys.

Well, i think ****** is a bit upset that for once, he isn't really the go-to-guy on a team. In Texas, he was the only person who would hit game after game after game. Here, in NY, he's got to deal with their best player in Jeter, HR hitting Giambi, Bob Abreu who seems to get on base all the time, and all the young players like Cano and Cabrera.

I think he wants to hit the ball out of the park every time he comes up to bat so he can prove he's worthy of the 25 Millions bucks and so that he proves he is the best on the team. He is trying WAY too hard, he just needs to relax and visualize himself getting hits and not strikeouts.

I think we've finally seen that GAYROD is truly a bust. He's at the end of his career. May good players do the New York to see their career end. Look at Sheffield, Giambi, Matsui, Jaret Wright... The only guys that remain good are the ones who came up to the bigs as yankees and have yankees all their lives. The best player on the club, JETER.

every one goes though slumps dont they?well a-rod is batting around 2.80,is gonna end up with over 30 homers, and over 100 rbi's.there is nothing wrong with him i would love 2 have him as a dodger.and enough about the 25 mill, wouldent you accept the money,i know i would.the yankkes only pay about 16 mill that is less than jeter.the media is doing a very good job saying that alex is having a bad year, what about bonds,he is way lower than alex.

Same thing he's always had a problem with...he puts WAY too much pressure on himself, especially with that quarter of a billion dollar contract hanging over his head every day. Add the spotlight that is New York and you get those kinds of stats.

Isn't it ironic he said jeter wasn't a leader, but the media clamors for Jeter to stick up for him ? What's even better is when he said Jeter was surrounded by talent and bats 2nd and he's hitting 2nd now and can't hit a sac fly to save his overpaid highlighted hair having life ?

A-Rod's just going through a slump. It happens to everyone. He'll have a strong finish to the year, don't worry. It appears to be some type of psychological issue. "it's in his head"- Joe Torre

Maybe if he didn't spend so much time counting his money and working his endorsements he could concentrate on what he is supposed to do.

I am surprised this guys head fits in the dugout. I think they should rename him too EgoRod or ERod.

on one show of baseball tonight, i think it was yesterday, they showed a mechanical flaw with his swing. his front hip was flying out to early, making his swing slow down, and making him vulnerable to fastballs.

also, he's putting WAY too much pressure on himself. he doesn't need to put that much pressure on himself because he has so many great hitters around him that can make him better by letting him see more pitches. they had a video of him crying before a game on the field and he was rubbing his eyes. i think he needs to take 2 or maybe 3 games off just to straighten himself out and get himself focused on the goal of winning the world series.
