yea they can but goldfish are messy so the ammonia levels get real high unless somethin is in there to clean up after it like a catfish

they can. They do prefer friends though, although they are not a shoaling fish, they are a social fish. Remember your little goldfish will one day be a very large 12 inch fish and need a very large tank and filter, and can live 20 or more years. They are best kept for very large tanks or ponds. I have 4 goldfish I keep inside that are around 5 inches each at the moment in a 48x15x19 but eventually they will need a 6 foot tank or more just for the 4 of them!

Because of their tiny tiny brains - yes, they can live alone.
If you don't have the space for multiple goldfish he'd be healthier on his own.
Remember - 1 inch of gold fish per 5 gallons. That's 2 wee fish in a 10 gallon tank.
If you get him "friends" in a little tank you may end up with no fish what so ever.
Because they're cold water and the waste they produce - don't mix them with other fish. Gold live with golds, few others will survive and less will be happy when mixed with them.

I would guess that most of the goldfish pets in America are swimming in glass globes all by themselves. In fact there is so little water surface for them to get air from in that kind of goldfish bowl, if you added a second goldfish both would die from lack of oxygen.

Goldfish are memebers of a family of fish that likes to "school". Meaning they like & enjoy company.
