I have an old countertop and it's a solid color laminate from the 70s or something. I want to replace it. I wonder if I could buy new laminate and put it on top of the old one. Is that possible?

i am pretty sure you can because we had our shiny blue laminate kitchen doors covered with nice white laminate..........you will need to sandpaper the surface first so that the glue has something to grip. and do it with the windows open or you will get high with the fumes :-)

You can but to have it done right I would take off the old laminate. I work in the construction business and have seen many a times the new laminate bubbles up. It is definitely needed to sand the old down but it is not fool proof.
When we were working on a fixer upper we did it this way for the quick and inexpensive sale of this home. If you plan to live there more than a couple of years and if you are spending alot for the new laminate it again is definitely worth taking up the new and even adding a new surface for the laminate to set on.

There are two things that need to be done to overlay laminate:
Scuffing the underlying hard surface(as has been discussed), and smoothing the surface. You cannot laminate over bumps or voids. This prep work is the most important step in the process, so make sure to get it right.

I wouldn't see why that couldn't be possible, just as long as your old laminate is secure to the countertop board underneath.

Yes. I worked in a factory that made counter tops and it was done to cut down on waste. Ruff it up with sand paper before applying the contact cement.
