Boring, especially since the head of Hezbollah said yesterday that he wouldn't have provoked the war by kidnapping two Israeli soldiers if only he'd known how mad it would make them!

Indeed.

Background in brief -- many Arab and/or Muslim nations don't accept that the state of Israel has the right to exist. Israel naturally disagrees. This underlies all violence in that area.

Hezbollah is a militant group set up in the 80s to eliminate 'the Zionist entity' (Israel). In July, they crossed the border and killed three Israeli soliders and kidnapped two more; their stated aim was a prisoner exchange. Israel demanded the return of the kidnapped soldiers and when that didn't happen began aerial bombardments, a naval blockade and ground invasion. Hezbollah sent long-range rockets into Israeli cities.

Hezbollah is based in Lebanon, but has very strong ties and financial backing from Iran and Syria. The Lebanese government has ignored calls to clamp down on Hezbollah for years; some say that the government is too weak to do so.

That's the short version, see the wiki article below for a slightly longer summary. The whole situation is complicated and confusing, especially since so many sources are heavily biased. If this doesn't answer your question to your satisfaction, add to the comments here or ask another one and I'll try to help.

There is no such thing as "brief history of..." as far as Jews and Arabs are concerned. It all goes back more than 2000 yrs ago so... Let's sum up the situation by saying everything's understandable once you take account they can't stand each other 'coz they're exactly the same, being close related cousins and all.

Hezbollah messed up AGAIN. Israel kicked some butt. And now the UN is going into Lebanon and the only purpose it will serve is to get some peace keepers killed.

More than that you will need to Google it.
