What are the main requirements to become proficient? What are the drawbacks (apart from the size of the instrument)? Are there any harp teachers in the Manchester/Sheffield areas of UK?

Imagine it is like a big, standing, two sided piano, in that one half of the 88 keys on a piano would be on one side and the other half, (bend it in half) on the other. (even though the harp actually has only 47 or 48 strings split between sides...) and there are not actually two sides but certain strings are thicker and more prominent on one side than the other. (hope that makes sense?)

This is an imaginary, visual thing that I hope I am not botching up on you?

and you pluck, rather than strike or press strings directly, rather than using another element (such as a key or a bow) to vibrate the sting to make it resonate. You alternate from one side of the instrument to the other (because you use one hand on one side and one on the other for different notes) to make chords, using all fingers intermittently and side to side, low and high (for different tension and tone, low and high) where as the piano is laid flat before you. It is a similar concept but a different means. All string instruments are very similar but quite different at the very same time in physical structure.

I want a harp too... It will complete my collection. They have to be the most beautiful things structurally and in sound in the instrument world.

I don't know much about the harp, but i would imagine it would be one of the more difficult instruments to master. Don't be put off at the thought of it being difficult though, the harder something is to achieve, the more rewarding it is when you achieve it. I can only encourage anyone who wants to learn any musical instrument, playing an instrument is very rewarding in many ways. GO FOR IT

Anyone can play the harp but to paly it well is a different matter.

Like anything else it is a question of aptitude and then practice, practice, and more practice.
