The name "vacuum cleaner" is confusing. F.i. in the Netherlands it is called "stofzuiger" which means " dust-sucker". The machine in the vacuum cleaner is sucking air and not make anything vacuum.

It works because the power plant creates a negative pressure and while doing so generates noise.
One bar metric or 32 Ibs ft Imp' is total vacuum.
Only then is it not possible to transmit sound and a vac' cleaner comes nowhere near that.
Powerful water pumps have a job to approach that degree of suction and if you want to pump from that depth the pump must be lowered, or the whole unit must be made waterproof and submersed.

The motor of the vacuum cleaner is not directly in the vacuum, its behind the vacuum. The motor makes the noise, not the vacuum itself.

Hai,
sound can't travel through vaccum,it need a medium for propagation.Whenever we hear a noisy sound from a vaccum cleaner, just remember that we are standing still here,in airy medium, trhough which sound can propagate.
Don't think a vaccum cleaner is in vaccum medium as name indicating Vaccum cleaner is works with inhaling pressure,so that sound comes out.Sound is due to the vibration produced by the machine, still spaced in airy medium so sound will be there as any other system.

it is named vacuum cleaner because it sucks in air to simulate a vacuum situation where some materials (dust, debris) will be drawn into the machine. but since there is air around us, the air automatically fills in the space of which it was sucked in by the cleaner and the cycle repeats itself. the air sucked in will later be 'disposed' from some openings. vacuum cleaners are noisy because of the dynamo that works inside the machine that sucks in air through the pipe. u can still hear it because we have air surrounding us, unless you are using it in outer space.
