Billions, and possibly trillions. There are many which we don't know about, either because they've been released in other countries or the artist/band who wrote those songs are unsigned and not very well known. Therefore, we can't produce an exact figure of how many songs have been written. However, it is possible to come up with a figure of how many songs have been written by signed artists/bands, including those from other countries (but it'll take an extremely long time and the figure continues to change every day).

Strangely enough, the answer is only thirteen - you would have thought it was more, but no, it is a proven fact.
They were all written by Roxy Music in 1973, and have been recycling ever since, hence the total lack of music before this date.
