The Queen had aye four Marys
Tonight she'll hae but three
There was Mary Beaton and Mary Seton
And Mary Carmichael and me

The song related to Mary Queen of Scots, who had the four Marys as her ladies in waiting. One of them fell for the wrong man and was killed on the queen's orders

I've got an old Joan Baez LP where she sings a song called "Mary Hamilton" and it ends with the verse already quoted "Today there are four Marys, tonight there will be but three etc." She has a baby by the King and drowns it to escape detection but is hanged.
