what is the best way to copy avi files to a dvd?

You need software which will encode them into DVD format- you can download TMPGENC on a trial basis, or buy something like Nero or Video Vault off the shelf at Best Buy,,,

Personally, I use Nero.
I tend to convert the avi to dvd format so that I can watch it on my TV.
