Yes he should be banned - it would make example of all those potential or current football thugs out there and send a good message out in football overall.

What happened out there was a disgrace, Thatcher should have the book thrown at him. Not that that will be do much. Look at the match between Charlton and Bolton on Saturday. Two players sent off for elbow challenges. Its a common factor in the game now. Alan "elbow" Shearer got away with it for years. I don't know how he did it but he did.
It will always be in the game. Some players are all elbows and arms, just pure clumsy, but some are just thugs. I know which ones are the thugs and I'm sure you guys too.
But another thing this season is the below standard of refereeing. They are shocking so far. Too many bad fouls going unpunished and too many silly fouls getting red cards or yellow cards. And if the ref last week had spotted this thugs elbow we would be seeing a massive fine and ban..But as it was only a yellow card the FA are looking to see if they can find a loophole to bring this scum of the earth down. Its not the first time he has done this, so its not like we are being harsh to him. He has a history of this and the sooner he is out of the game the better.
Duncan Ferguson was sent to prison some years ago for headbutting a player whilst he was playing for Rangers. Should thatcher get the same punishment..??
In my view..YES...

He should be banned from the sport and submitted into a mental institution. what he did shouldn't be addressed as a football issue but as a crime. If Pedro Mendes had slipped into a coma or worse, he could face charges for manslaughter. The worse part is that this wasn't Thatcher's first act of violence on the pitch.

Does anyone else think it is a bit of an over-reaction?

Shocking challenge and one that no-one wants to see becoming common-place, but it has been dealt with by the club, and he will be banned by the FA.

How about Roy Keane trying to break Alf Inge Haaland's leg? He got a 3 game ban and was fined a weeks wages.

Thatcher is an idiot, but sending him to jail would just be ridiculous.

Why? Football is not for sissies. That's why the Americans call your British football soft. This is not to say Thatcher was right but look at hardmen of British soccer - Tony Adams, Terry Butcher, Martin Keown, etc. Those are the reall men! May be you guys should start weasring helmets like the yanks.

YES the FA should come up with a deterrent sentence - what he did to Mendes cannot be defended from any point of view - violent physical assault with no intention of playing the ball. Banned for the entire duration of the season at least.

Yes - not only was it a terrible challenge, but Thatcher has done similar things before, both in Man City's pre-season tour in China, and as a Wimbledon player.

He should receive a lengthy ban and a fine.

Yep, The blokes an idiot. All he's ever been is a hacker who tries to knock lumps out of people. What he did was so blatant and just plain cowardly. He wouldn't do it to a man on the street but a fellow pro and try to make it actually look like a f-in tackle........ He should be treated like cantona was when he got his nine month ban, he was racially abused tho' like zidane and although they too were both wrong, you can see why they happend and understand it in a way.............

yes he should be banned but through the football association luckily Mendes was not hurt and has no grudge I liked the response from pearce suspend him and issue a statement that behaviour cannot be condoned but sometimes I wonder what coaches and managers say to their players eg He doesn't like the
physical side so let him know you are there or stop him he is their play maker on analysis that was how England won the world cup

that's cool if that's unique, yet lots of the time that's in simple terms one thing that's been performed in the previous. Or that's 0.5 a super gesture, like he attempted to do some thing particular to look cool yet substitute into afraid to get too loopy. while you are going to do it, then do it each and every of how! additionally, while this is a super promposal in front of a team of folk, I think of it may be lots of rigidity to assert particular, that's unfair. maximum severely, it relies upon on the guy your asking's character. could they actually must be requested the way which you're questioning of?
