I am British and thank goodness I am not like the majority of Brits who drink until they are ill. The whole situation is out of hand, especially with young women. You can walk down the main street of any town in Britain on a Friday or Saturday night and see girls, vomiting, urinating in doorways, fighting and swearing. It really is bad and people seem to have lost all self respect. The so call ladette culture which started with The Spice Girls is ridiculous, girls want to out drink men but most don't realise that their bodies cannot handle alcohol as well as the male body and they certainly don't know that the fact that if they drink more than 1 pint of beer or the equivilant in any one day that they are increasing their chances of contracting breast cancer by a massive 40%. The government needs to do something very fast.

I wouldn't agree with that statement. Can you provide data to prove that?
The Germans and Austrians are also heavy drinkers (they drink beer during lunch hour then go back to work). Danish people also like their night cap. People in Sweden and Norway also drink lots of hard liqueur, as do the Danes.
The Spanish, Italians,Greek and the French drink lots of wine (at family dinners, during the day, when they go out, in parks, cafes, etc). Eastern Europeans can also hold their liqueur well.
Maybe it seems that the British drink more because they drink when they go out, so you can see it, as opposed to other nations who drink with their meals or when socializing with friends at home. Pubs and eating out are not so popular in other parts of Europe.
Maybe there is a higher number of registered alcohol addicts in Britain because it's not as conservative as some other parts of Europe, so it is not embarrassing to ask for help. Same goes for drinking out- in some Southern parts that are very family-oriented it is not considered appropriate to get drunk in public.
I do not think that the Brits drink more, they just do it more publicly.

I work in a pub & have worked in numerous other pubs during the past 12 years & this generalisation is incorrect as pubs are generally quiet during the day with only the regulars coming in for a few pints.
It is only recently that the new legislation has come about where pubs can stay open past 11pm.

Because many still have a binge mentailty, plain and simple, get them down your necks as there's only 12 hours til closing time! Its a very silly, and embarrassing way to be, and the rest of Europe does look down on this very much. I'm not saying other countries don't have problems, Spain does with teenagers and drinking, but boils down again to binge mentailty, get them dowm asap as mam will catch them!

The barbaric culture that we have inherited from our Germanic ancestors? The longer working week resulting in stress that needs to be removed by drinking ourselves into oblivion and causing a nuisance at every opportunity? Who knows?
All I can be certain of is that I cannot stand it when our streets become infested with inebriated morons after a certain time of night.

Where did you get your statistics from? As many Europeans drink wine or beer with lunch. Do you mean British people on holiday because if you do exactly that, they're on holiday-often cheaper, and they're relaxing.

When I first read this question I thought it couldn't be right, what about France, Ireland, Germany, Italy, and Spain?
So I checked, the Brits are pretty far down on the Alcohol Consumption list:
