Here's the deal.....you can only conceive when there is an alive egg released into your body (ovulation) they live approximately 12-48 hours...but

Sperm live anywhere from 3 to 5 days...... Also your cycle can change....you can all the sudden ovulate out of cycle.

so the answers to your questions are yes and yes....you could get pregnant anytime, but your chances are much greater when you are ovulating, that is the only time it is possible, but if you have sex before, some sperm may remain alive to get you, or you may ovulate off cycle.

That is why people who use natural family planning usually have so many kids!

You can only get pregnant in the days surrounding ovulation.

In a "perfect" 28 day cycle, ovulation happens on day 14. For a few days (3-8) before ovulation, the cervix produces mucus that helps the sperm get through the cervix and uterus and into the fallopian tube to meet up with the egg. Then, once ovulation occurs, the egg will only survive for about 24 hours unless the sperm meets the egg and fertilizes it. So, in the "perfect" cycle, by day 15, the egg is dead. Most fertility experts suggest those trying to avoid pregnancy count two days . . . one for the first egg, and one for a possible second egg. (This happens occasionally . . . one egg is ovulated, and before the rest of the eggs get the hormonal signal that it has happened, another egg is also ovulated. This is how non-identical twins are formed.)

So, you can get pregnant if you have sex in the days before you ovulate, since the cervical mucus helps the sperm survive inside the woman for up to 5 days.

Now, as for the idea that you can get pregnant any time. Unless you are paying very close attention to your cervical mucus, height of your cervix, and your basal body temperature, you will not know when you are ovulating. And, in order to be good at interpreting all of this, you need to do it for a few months. You see, none of us has a "perfect" cycle. Even women who usually have a 28 day cycle may have occasions when they are very stressed and ovulation is delayed. Or they may have regular bleeding, but not be ovulating at all. Or they may have 28 days between cycles, but have short luteal phases (time between ovulation and your period), so that they ovulate on day 18 or even later. Using the days in your cycle to determine when you will ovulate is not very effective.

So, for people who are not charting fertility signs, it is best to assume that you can get pregnant any time.

You can only get pregnant when you ovulate, so it depends on just when you ovulate during your cycle. Not everyone has a 28 day cycle and ovulates on day 14. If you are ttc, you need to find out when you ovulate. You can either chart your bbt (basil body temperature) daily. When your temperature rises 0.5 degrees, then you are ovulating. You can chart your daily temp on fertilityfriend.com. Or, you can buy an ovulation kit. I recommend Clear Blue Easy (about $20 for 7 tests). Based on how long your cycle is, the instructions will tell you what day is best to begin testing. When the test turns blue, you are ovulating and should have sex. Good luck.

Sperm can live up to 5 days inside you so there is about a two week span that you can get pregnant but, when the egg is released if there are no sperm then you won't get pregnant.

go to http://www.mymonthlycycles.com and put in your period info and it will calculate when you will be fertile and ovulating.

Yes you have a higher chance at getting pregnant while ovulating but it is also true that you can get pregnant at anytime (it may just be harder)

I got pregnant while on my period and their are alot of people that claim you can't get pregnant on your period.

Good luck
