If you're moving from a full-time position, to a part-time position within the same company (same job, same duties, etc - just doing it in fewer hours), do you fill out a letter of resignation?

My boss requested this of me, and it smells fishy. A resignation letter means that I'm quitting, which I'm not. No one asked me to 'resign' from my part time position when I moved to full time 4 years ago - why do I have to do it now to go backwards? Except maybe so he can try to pay me less because I technically 'quit'?

Your boss is just asking for documentation of the change and that you requested it. This is normal business practice. You don't have to say that you resign from your full-time job...just say that you are requesting that your status and hours be changed from full-time to part time and what the effective date is.

I agree with you - sounds fishy to me also. I don't see any reason for a letter of resignation, as just as you stated, that would mean you were leaving the company. All you are doing is changing your work hours. Don't do the letter, I think they are up to no good on your behalf

your boss has some plans that he is not ready to reveal yet. my advice is , try your best to carry out the same duty allocated to you . bear in mind you are having the same workload with lesser working hours , logically & naturally , you would not be able to complete the task in the same period as when you were working full time. relax, do not put pressure on yourself. after one or two months , talk to your boss personally . discuss with him/ her , you did your best , but the problem remains , tell him / her , you feel you are responsible to tell the truth ( i.e. same job can not be completed in lesser time ) ask him / her , can he / she , as a boss , help to think of a solution ?

lastly , do not quit if you think you like the job , because the problem is not you . the boss made the changes , let him / her solve the problem that arised as a result of this change.

fight with a fighting spirit & fight cheerfully. the boss created problem , throw it back to him / her unnoticeably .

well, if he pays you less because of less hours worked in the same period. take it as an opportunity to look for another part-time job to fill up the time and get back the short fall of the pay so that it may adds up to be the same / similar pay . Moreover, who knows, you may finally landed in a greener pasture. cheers , good luck.

Dont do it and see what happens. Tell him/her to give your an example or better yet have them write it and then you can decide if you want to sign it or not. Also, what is the alternative? Will you loose your job either way (sing or not sign)? Smells fishy to me too. Good luck!
