My friends are making this year's FF league a live draft league. It's impossible for me to be there, and I can't be near a computer when the draft is happening. They've told me to just pre-rank my players, and when my turn comes up my picks will happen automatically. Is this a good idea? Since I basically was going to sit there with my pre-ranked list of players anyway, wouldn't I get the same results? What are the drawbacks (if any)?

only as a last resort. but you won't be able to account for "runs" at a position (like when all the TE start going for example). When you do auto-draft, you might wind up taking someone way too early, or miss the boat altogether.

If you can't be there live, you will have to have auto-pick do it for you.

The main downfall to me is that you can't really rank all the players in the way you'd want them drafted. For example, I would always rather draft a RB for my bench over a TE who will start. Your RB's will have bye weeks and potential injuries - and you will want backups who start or see significant playing time. (most) Starting TE's don't score as much, but autopick will make sure you have your starter before you get a third RB or WR.

No, I don't advise it. Everyone's draft strategy changes as the draft unfolds. Plus using pre-ranking can get you two QB's or two TE's before you get a 2nd RB or WR. Don't do it if at all possible!
