I am in daily e-m contact with friend in Oaxaca city water turned off no trash collection last few weeks rioters cllash with police many buses not running he says it could happen any time.

Daytime, I've heard is OK, nighttime, not.

Avoid downtown until things settle down, which might be never. The US State Dept has a Public Announcement about Oaxaca which expires 9/24/2006.

Hello, i'm from mexico, and Oaxaca's center is quite safe, but right now is not very good time to visit because they have a labor problem and many local school teachers rae on strike and made a camp at the center, so perhaps you should think in visit another state, perhaps Taxco that is very near to Acapulco.

I felt very safe in Oaxaca. I like this city very much.

fairly safe...the only place you really dont want to find yourself at all is buenos aires, argentina if you are going to be spending time in southern SA.
