Probably not much in it re noticeable performance but the Athlon is cheaper and thus better value for money.

I would say AMD. Use the link for a good comparison aid. Plug in the two CPU's you want to compare, then pick one of the many benchmarks, It will show the rankings.

I would say athlon 64, because you get more bang for the buck.
