One of the plug in air fresheners...I think Glade make one. THe ones where you can change the setting are good, and the smell lasts a long time so you don't have to keep it turned on constantly. They are quite pricey but the one I have has lasted ages, and is still going!

There may be many powerful and long lasting but good 'ol incense is the best, it comes in a wider variety of smells and the smell lingers for days. Also, one stick in incense can fragrance up to 3 medium rooms at a time... try get an airfreshener that beats that!

Get one of those liquid air fresheners with the reeds. It is usually a jar filled with scented oil, and you put 10 wooden reeds into it. The oil travels up the reeds and scents the air. When the scent starts to disipate, just flip the reeds over and put the dry ends into the oil. I bought one in June, and it is only half-way down and still fills my whole upper level of my home with fragrance. I got mine at Pier One.

I gave up on the air freshners because they just don't work that well for me.
I bought 2 IonicBreeze air purifiers and now, I have a nice smelling house, even with the 3 cats and their litter box.

Smoke, grease, and all of those other wonderful household odors and stains are eliminated very well with a solution of sudsy ammonia used to clean with. It's inexpensive and goes a long way, even in your laundry ( for socks ) it takes odors away.
When you are finished cleaning and you want to make your house smell nice in another inexpensive way, simmer some orange peel or apple peel and cloves with some cinnamon in water on the stove.

Fresh air - open the windows and breathe. Air fresheners have chemicals in them that can cause breathing problems. And they stink. Dump them.

I use wax melts in an oil burner. You can get some absolutely great smells and they seem to permeate all through the house. I use a teak and sandalwood. You can buy really nice oil burners now. You can also mix and match smells to your own taste. Hope this helps.

I would say Febreze Air Effects. It comes in a huge variety of scents. I love most of them and once you spray the scent lasts and lasts.
