Well lets see if I can shed some light on this without all the ridiculous claims. First Freemasons are a fraternity "men only" There is also a female version called the Eastern Star. They have three appendent bodies the York Rite Scottish Rite and Shriners. All Shriners are Masons but not all Masons are Shriners. Masons raise money for charity providing millions of dollars a day to various charities and it costs about 8 million a day to run a Shriners hospital where a child is treated at no charge. As previously said a society of secrets rather than a secret society all our rituals are plastered all over the Internet. But our grips, keys, and tokens are kept as secret as possible in the information age. I challange any one of these people that have made these incredable claims about the Masons to do as much charity work as a Mason does. Lastly I dont know where that person lives that claimed that the Lodge had been outlawed but I worry more about the people making those decisions than the Masons if that even is the case.

A freemason is simply someone who belongs to a masonic lodge. Also the Eastern Star is for both men and women. Once a member becomes a master mason, he may chose to continue his "Journey" and join either the York rite or the scottish rite or both. to become a shriner you must first be a master mason. I personally am a master mason and a member of the eastern star.

Its a secret society, not everyone can join. They have regular meetings, talk in code, have secret handshakes and are apparently sworn brothers.
Its all a bit creepy and sad. There used to be a masonic 'lodge' (their meeting place)in New Scotland Yard until they realised that was probably a bad idea and banned it.

It is not a secret society. It's a society with secrets. There is a difference. If it was a secret society, no one would know about it.
