In school we have to take history of the united states. I asked my teacher what the united states were and she laughed at me. She really hurt my feelings. She said that we lived in the united states. But, I thought that we lived in America.

No, we don't live in America, silly. What a funny girl you are. Your teacher is soooooo dumb for laughing at you. The United States? I don't know. I've heard of it, but, by golly gee, I just don't know what it is!!! OMG, I think I'm not as smart as I think I am!! Maybe it has something to do with my dad who is a cop and wants me to leave my bathroom door open when taking a bath. He's not too smart in the upstairs either. So,...where do we live?

okey let me try to explain this, you ask a very interesting question. You do live in America; however America is a continent and the United States like other countries belong to the American Continent. Now, What is the United States? The united States is a country made up of currently 51 states. Hope that this answers your question.

That seems completely opposite... it's sad to see the teacher being ignorant and close-minded and the student being open-minded and being shot down like that. The other answers are correct... "United States of America" is sometimes referred to as just "America" by some, BUT there's a lot more to it than that. The 2 main borders are: on the North with Canada, on the South with Mexico. There are 2 oceans and a Gulf that border the U.S. by water: Pacific on the Western shore and Atlantic Ocean on the Eastern shore, the Gulf of Mexico borders the South-Eastern shore from Texas across to Florida and the Florida Keys. The capital is Washington, D.C. which is on the borders of Maryland and Virginia. The flag has 50 stars for the 50 states and the 13 stripes for the original 13 colonies.

*Of course there's Alaska and Hawaii too... Alaska borders Canada on the East, the North Pole/Arctic Ocean on the North, Bering Sea on the West, and Gulf of Alaska/Pacific Ocean on the South. It's also the biggest of the 50 states and can stretch from the Eastern shore to the Western shore if measured across the U.S. Hawaii borders the Pacific Ocean on all sides and is 2nd smallest state. (Rhode Island is smallest which is in the North Eastern U.S. commonly referred to as the "New England" region, hence the "New England Patriots" NFL team.)

If you want to know more, my suggestion would be to have your parents transfer you to a school with teachers that are there to teach not there to show off how arrogant they are. If anything that teacher should've apologized on behalf of the School District you've been "educated" in... which of course is where that same teacher and the way it sounds more teachers just like that one all teach at.

We are not the only America's in the world. There is South America as well as North America (where we are located on any Atlas). What makes us different is that our states are united into this one Country..united as in making up the boundaries of our Country. So..you live in the United States of America..and that is something to understand and be proud of!

One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. That is the United States of America. America is a continent, we happen to live in North America. So all of the states, united together plus Hawaii and Alaska form the UNITED States of America, forming one nation.

You do live in America, you live on the continent of North America, which also includes Canada and Mexico. The United States of America is the country in which you live, which includes the 50 states, plus additional territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, etc).

We live in the United States of America. We call it "America" for short.

The United States is exactly what it sounds like- a union of self governing states brought together to form a nation.
