I'm not gay but here's what I think...
Marriage is a legal process. Straight people take it for granted that
a soldier's widow should recieve his pension. They take for granted that their spouse is entitled to conjugal property (unless there's a pre nuptial agreement). They take it for granted that if one dies, the other automatically gets custody of the children (gay people sometimes have kids from previous marriages).

If you were gay and your union with your partner was not legally recognized, then how do you claim benefits if your partner dies serving his country? How do you make sure that your partner is provided for in case you die and your hard earned money doesn't end up with the parents who rejected you (in case there's no will)? How do you know that the your kid doesn't end up with back with a bad mom just because the state refuses to recognize your partner as having parental rights as well?

Why not? Can you give one good reason why 2 people who love each other shouldn't be able to get married?

The only reasons I've ever seen cited are either personal prejudice ("That's just wrong...") or else religious reasons ("because the bible says so"). For the first reason: why should just your opinion have the force of law? If we had that as a guideline, we'd probably still be holding slaves. And for the second reason: the US constitution guarantees freedom of religion. And that also includes freedom FROM religion. Do you presume that your all religious rules should apply to buddhists, hindus, jews, wiccans, or the followers of any other religion? Then why should just this rule apply to everyone?

Lastly - tell me one way that your marriage is threatened or damaged if two people next door, across town, or 4 states away get married. Does it increase your chances of getting divorced, or becoming a spouse beater? Does it make you want to cheat on your spouse? If not, why worry about it?

If my diatribe here comes off harsh, then good. I don't want to sound mean, but I do want to get past anyone's usual dismissive attitude and actually make them think for a minute, to question any knee-jerk attitudes. This issue sounds to me a whole lot like the early civil rights arguments from the 50's and 60's. I expect that gay marriage will be legal in large parts of the US within 10 years. And people at that time will realize what a non-issue this is.
