A true and lasting friendship means that you will always be there for each other no matter what. You spend time together, talk together, share together the good as well as the bad times. You are just there for each other whenever needed and you know that you can always depend on each other. You love, trust and respect each other and you help each other out and don't want your friend to get him or herself in to trouble. True friendship is sharing, laughing and crying together whatever happens and loving, trusting, respecting and accepting each other no matter what.

True and lasting friendship is that which comes from caring about another person not because it is pleasurable or that you gain anything from it or that it has components of quid pro quo (you help me I'll help you) or some type of equal exchance like a currency but pure caring about someone for the sake of them. To do so Aristotle woud argue puts you in the class of people who do virtuous acts for the rightness of doing so. To really do a charitable act of this nature ("friendship of goodness" instead of "friendship of utiity" or "friendship of peasure" as Aristotle called them) will separate you from others who have never thought about doing anything for anyone without it having a positive outcome on them. I go into friendships now with the idea that if someone has stumbled in my life, is needy, and I have a means of helping them I should do so and when they are ready to go I just allow it to happen. I allow them to come and go like my breath. It is best and a more dignified way; it also is good exercise making one stronger. I have had times where I thought a friend was someone who should be there for me It just made me more needy and weak. This is the dignified way of pursuing friendship.

When you say true and lasting friendship, it means you and your friend have stayed loyal to each other. I have a male friend for almost 20 years now. We were classmates in college and would often be seatmates because we were arranged alphabetically. Cant believe we're still friends even if we have our own families and he works in another country. We have to treasure a friend so they will treat us the same.

Errmm.. How about a relationship where two friends think of each other and bother to call each other once in a while?
Many times friendship withered when one/ two party(ies) in a relationship fail to keep in touch.

It all revolves around sharing
Shared morals
Shared interests
Shared history
If you have shared morals and interests you will want to spend time with someone. As you spend time with someone, you develop shared history.
The only additional thing is forgiveness. With all that sharing, you eventually get on each others nerves and have arguments. Forgiveness lets you get beyond the arguments.

any relationship can only last if there is trust; compassion; respect and compromise. incorporate those things into your friendships (both individuals) and everything ought to be fine...
