Most oscar keepers are getting away from feeding live feeder fish to their oscars. The feeders are raised in ponds outdoors and can bring in many kinds of parasites and diseases that could kill or debilitate your fish.

The best thing you could do for him is to switch him over to a dry pellet of some kind with high protein content.

I fed my five oscars dry dog food pellets for years with no ill effects. They were large (12-14") and really made the water splash when I tossed in their supper.

I was feeding goldfish to them until I read about the parasites and diseases that they can carry. Plus, goldfish were costing me a small fortune every week. A bag of dog food lasts longer and is much cheaper in the long run.

I feed mine feeder fish once a week and flake food the rest of the week. You feed them enough feeder fish that they can eat in about an hour. Feeder fish are normally nasty fish and you don't want them left in the tank for any amount of time. My kids also feed them worms, spiders and flies. Worms are their favorite and they will literally jump out of the tank to get them. I noticed better color in my fish when they are actually getting real meat.

IT depends on the size of the fish.If its a larger fish I would suggest 20 every couple days. you just have to play it by ear,or sight if you will.I have a 18 inch African Knife and a 12 inch gar and they eat 40 every week.Bigger fish dont need to eat as often.
