Baby E.C. When Out?

Question

I recently asked a q. about E.C. & was encouraged by the responce & want to give it a go!
I want to give it 100% & ditch diapers all together (well try anyway!), How / where do you e.c. when out, e.g:- walking in the woods, the beach, shopping, friends houses ect...
Please let me know how / where to do this please. Lol Philippa xxx.

I usually use diapers while out, but I do try to "potty" her when we're out and about. I usually keep her in a sling and if I can tell she needs to pee or poo, I find the closest bathroom if we're indoors and set her on the potty, facing the back with me behind her. At the beach or somewhere outdoors, just potty her wherever you want, out of the way of course. Just make sure you don't endanger your child, like pottying baby over poison ivy or over an outhouse. Those suckers are deep!

It's easiest to use a sling most of the time because you will be better able to sense your baby's needs that way.

Good luck! I still haven't ditched the diapers and we've been at it for about 6 weeks so far. I've only EC'ed my current baby, not my toddler. Fortunately she potty trained within 2 weeks of her 2nd birthday. Lucky me!

YAY! I'm glad you decided to try out EC!
I highly recommend joining one of the EC yahoogroups to discuss real-life EC experiences and what has worked for other moms. This has been a huge help to me.

Here are some ideas for EC when out of the house:

Take along a small potty or container to use as a potty. Baby Bjorn makes a very nice "little potty" that is small enough to travel well. I have brought mine along on trips and used it in the back of the car, on the side of the road, in a hotel room, etc.

With a baby boy you can use a jar for pee. This doesn't work well for a baby girl, a small plastic bowl is better for girls.

You can seal up a jar and empty it later, you can bring along a container to empty a little potty into, or use a towel/cloth diaper to soak up the pee and carry it home in a waterproof bag if you prefer.

Out in the woods, it's fine to just go behind a tree and "water the plants." That's what the wildlife do!

At stores there's usually a bathroom. Malls often have "family bathrooms" now to make it easier to change babies and take toddlers to the potty. Well, it works for babies too.

At friends and relatives homes, I just use their bathroom like I would at home. If I'm not ready to talk to them about EC just yet, I say I need to change the baby, or I need to check the pants, and just go off to the bathroom.

And above all, remember to just relax and enjoy your baby! EC is about communicating with your baby, and being "in tune" with each other. That's why it can be such a great bonding experience.

My friend who EC's brings a little potty when they stay the weekend. When we are out and about, they will usually put her in a cloth diaper for the ride and toilet her on the regular toilet or sink wherever they are going. There are also portable baby pottys available.

We are starting to EC a bit with my son, we just got the book, "Diaper Free! The Gentle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene" it looks pretty good!

I use diapers while out and sometimes at home wth my 4.5 month old, even though he is pretty reliable. I find that I have really good luk ECing at friends houses, and I'm doing better at work (I take my 3.5 yo and baby with me), but in places where we have to actually fnd and get to a public bathroom, we're more hit or miss. My baby also refuses to pee anywhere but a bathroom, so he's not as convenient as some other babies who will pee outside. I'm not quite ready yet to begin carrying the potty around, though I know that will likely be our next step.

My boy is almost 6 months old and we ec all the time. I have a better catch rate when out because I carry him in a sling and he doesn't want to go in his pants and signals well. I am always aware of where the bathrooms are when out and take him upon arriving at a destination and before leaving to go back home. He is in cloth diapers or training pants most of the time because we have mostly carpet. I would try naky butt if we had more ec friendly flooring!

I keep a small potty chair (BBLP style potty from Target, cost about $5) for using in my car and friend's houses, plus a potette ($10 from www.theecstore.com) in my backpack for when I'm around and about without a car. Some people will hold their babies in the "classic position" at a tree or bush, though my son just looks at me like I'm nuts. Sometimes just spending a bunch of time naked outside is helpful, too.

I use a diaper as backup when out, I have a little potty that I use when arriving and departing. I f hiking, just use the woods :)
