1) Alcohol is not the sin of the devil that tea-totalling sects dearly love to make it out to be. 2) Wine was a symbol of opulence - you needed lots of land for a vineyard, then you needed the manpower to grow and harvest the grapes, process them into juice and then the time to let it ferment - which made wine something the common man couldn't afford, unlike Jesus' blood which was poured out for all. 3) On a somewhat opposite note, wine was part of their culture, readily available from a very young age. It wasn't "mom and dad's party suppies kept under lock and key". It wasn't seen as a teen-ager's right of passage into adulthood. 4) Although the term "wine" is used in the Bible, it may not have been the alcoholic beverage that we refer to by that term. It may have been what we would simply call "grape juice".

Back then, wine was really the only beverage they drank since water was scarce. They drank wine with meals ...even the children. They didn't drink to get drunk. Jesus compared his body to bread & his blood to wine. These were common things & his people could relate to this.He wanted them to think of him every time they sat down together.

There were no other beverages at his time 2000 years ago. THeir wine, then was only alchoholic enough to kill the bugs and germs, about 1-3%. THere was no sanitation. No tap water, no sewers. People drank wine because it was pure.

I am not christian, so I might be wrong on this, however:

In the bible wine is a symbol of prosperity and happiness. In Passover, for example: Ten drops of wine are spilled in memory of the pain the egyptians suffered during the ten plagues(We can't rejoice on the pain of others, even if it was for our benefit)

Wine was a common staple in Hebrew diet. Water was usually contaminated, and without refrigeration, any juice would only ferment anyway.
