Not the entire USA. It's the super valcano at Yellowstone that's been generating the hype. It's said that the smoke plume covered the entire US (found debris all over US) but also caused the it to rain ash all over the world!

Eventually it will have to errupt. The link below talks about the documentary that was seen on The Learning Channel. It talks about the boiling of the water along the trails. The mysterious deaths of many moose and the rising of the lake. They took pictures from the early 1920s and then current ones and it was amazing. There are changes happening there...which indicates it will blow...how severe the explosion will be --- we just don't konw because we haven't seen it in our recent history. Only what scientists have uncovered in the surrounding areas. I know they found ash as far away as Kentucky...

What scientists have been pulling your leg? To think that the entire continent (of North America) is sitting atop a huge dormant volcano is a gross simplification of the crust. I have seen various basement rocks in different parts of the United States and Mexico and it always contain very complex systems of igneous and metamorphic rocks. This is what any reasonable person would expect, given about 4 billion years of geologic processes that have occurred.

The words are "sittting" and "inactive". There are a number of inactive volcanoes in the NW United States (like Mt. St. Helens) and a huge one under Yellowstone Park and surrounding areas.
