NEED TO REWRITE..The lava is making its way down the mountainside. It is late evening and the lava is glowing like red hot coals. It also looks like a bright red tongue that is slowly growing longer and longer. The hissing and crackling of the lava can be heard miles away. It looks as if it is making its way to the south side of the town and eventually to the sea. Everything in its path is destroyed-fields of cane, cars, buildings.

I'm NO English major, but here's my version:

During the late evening, the lava makes its way down the mountainside glowing like red hot coals; like a bright red tongue that is slowly growing longer and longer. The hissing and crackling of the lava is heard for miles. As it makes its way to the south side of the town and eventually to the cold sea, it destroys everything in its path (fields of cane, cars and buildings).

It already is present tense, so there is nothing to fix in that regard.

However, your verbs mostly use a complex two-part structure, which robs the text of energy. For example, you say, "The lava is making its way down the mountainside. It is late evening and the lava is glowing like red hot coals." In the first sentence, the verb is "is making" and in the second sentence one of the verbs is "is glowing." These are two-part or complex verbs that dull the action a bit. Also, the "ing" endings tend to be a little weak.

I suggest you re-write these sentences as, "The lava makes its way down the mountainside. It is late evening and the lava glows like red hot coals." This is more active than "is making" and "is glowing."

BaztheFraz is correct, the paragraph is already in present tense. landkm's suggestion is wrong, that's past tense.
