Ooooohhh, that's not good!!! (that's my technical IT opinion).
You need to un-install messenger then reinstall it. If that doesn't work you might need to do a XP reinstallation & check that you have all the windows updates.
It could also mean that your hard disk is on it's way out.

mine does this sometimes when iam signing off ,i have been told by a I.T expert that all is ok and to just turn it off.My computer is a year old Xp and has done this a few times and it works fine
