Cuz people used to stick the stickers on the car bumpers...but people got sooooo short sighted after surfing too much internet and watching tv, we had to stick the stickers on more strategic spots on the cars. OUR EYESIGHTS ARE FAILING!

Bumper stickers could not predate the introduction of the automobile bumper; the Ford Model T lacked bumpers to which bumper stickers could be conveniently attached, but the Ford Model A, introduced in 1927, had them. One online source credits the current bumper sticker to Forest P. Gill, a silkscreen printer from Kansas City.
The first bumper stickers appeared shortly before World War II; they were flag-like, and attached to the bumper by wires. Gill replaced the wire attachments with pressure sensitive adhesive, and as a result bumper stickers became more widespread and practical.
Considerable variation exists around the world as to the context and purpose of stickers.
On some vehicles, some stickers are like trophy signs of WWII aeroplanes, either of locations visited or actions completed.
They have also been extensively applied to rear windows as well, where legislative measures have not banned such use.
In some countries, the level of derogatory and aggressive messages have not been prevented in any way, as a consequence where owners or drivers wish such items onto themselves, expletives and suspect morals and behaviour are clearly pasted onto the rear of cars and people.

We call them trailer trash stickers or hippie decals since those are the only 2 groups who actually stick them on their bumper. You can tell the difference by 2 methods: If it has anything to do with God or Jesus or NASCAR or guns it's a trailor trash sticker. If it has anything to do with peace, The Greatful Dead, or the environment then it's a hippie decal.
If it is on the window then you know it is either someone with a little bit of sense or they ran out of room on their bumper.

They are desinged for the bumper. They have an elongated, rectangular shape conducive to being mountable on any automobile bumper.
...hence, the name.
This can be confusing to the current generation of kids who were raised in a sticker utopia the likes of which older generations could only dream of.
