I don't know him personally, but I gotta say it's Robin Williams, controversial as that may be. But if you want controversy, I say running a close second is the late Andy Kaufman.
I know, I know, a lot of people think Kaufman faked his own death, and his antics went beyond controversial into the downright weird, but where else can you find someone who can lip synch to the 'Mighty Mouse' theme and bring down the house (not to mention wrestling women on national TV for his own sexual gratification. True). Check out the book 'Andy Kaufman Exposed' for more. Genius or Insane? You decide!
As for Robin, I have no idea how he keeps up the manic pace, while philosophizing from everything from religion to how cats mark their territory. IMOH, he's also a damn good actor. I wish him the best in rehab.
Remember, comedy makes for good philosophy, as long as it makes you think.

There's been plenty of funny people, men and women. I have only seen two people perform live. John Leguizamo and Dave Chappelle. Both were hilarious! Leguizamo's humor is like most Latin comics, where they include alot of family stories and Dave tells a lot of stories that are funny! But I lean toward John more because I seen him perform twice.

It depends on whether you're talking in TV/movies roles, or stand-up.
In a weekly sitcom, Seinfeld.
Stand-up, Eddie Murphy
Richard Pryor was the funniest EVER, may he rest in peace.

Just saw Chris Porter on tv the other day. Only time I've seen him but it was enough to make an impression. Great routine.
Pimpin' ain't easy. It's time-consuming.
