But I would have thought you would have to tune them before you could play them.... just like any other musical instrument.
I just love to hear the bagpipes. Anyone watching the Edinburgh Tattoo last week surely could not have failed to be moved by listening to them espcially when they played with the other massed bands.

If you can't play the bagpipes well enough to know when they need tuning, then why bother tuning them.

it's just obvious. The drones of the pipes are all pitched to complement one another and if one is "out" it's obvious.
