My son is almost 9 months old and has had 8 teeth for a few months already. I give him teeny tiny bits of my food, like breads and things and he is SOOO interested in any food I have. I would like to give him bigger pieces to hold on to but I am a first time mom and dont really know when it's appropriate and how not to be scared to death of him choking! When can I give him cooked carrots or banannas without hovering over him scared out of my mind. He does have the chewing response already, but things to tend to hang up in his throat a lot. THanks ALL!

I did state that he already has eight teeth, just to reiterate - thanks everyone!

You have gotten good advice from a few of the previous posters, I just wanted to add that when your introducing new foods try to keep it to 1-2 new things a week in case of any allergic reactions, this way you can weed out the culprit easier.

I have a 10 month old and he has been eating
'table foods" for 2 months now. Heres a list of some of the things he eats and are easy for him to chew (he has 6 teeth)..All of these foods have been given a green light by his pediatrician.

Scrambled eggs
Soft cooked sweet potato chunks
Soft cooked carrots
Avacado bits
Cooked green beans
diced fresh peaches(wait till they have softened a bit)
Whole grain toast with a little butter
Banana pieces
Gerber meat sticks

I don't recommend the biter biscuits..My son choked on a piece that broke off and many of my friends have had close calls with them also.

Veggie and fruit puffs are also great once they adapt to finger foods.

Babies become interested in finger foods anywhere from 6 to 9 months, but most start at around 8 months. Teething biscuits are not the best choice to start with - your baby probably doesn't have many teeth yet and will be mashing her food with her gums. So she needs something that easily breaks down in the mouth, to prevent a choking hazard. Pieces of cooked vegetables are best - try baking a sweet potato in its skin, letting it cool, then cutting it into cubes. You can dust them with a little cinnamon - they are nice and soft and have a sweet taste that babies love. Hi,
I am a mom of five and I found that each child degree of eagerness towards food determined how soon I fed him or her solid food. I started each one on cereal mixed with breast milk at about 1 month old. I added pureed vegetables observed tolerance (via stools) and gradually added fruits. Once tolerance was established and about half the food made it to the stomach and not on the floor. I started making the food less and less smooth until it reached chunkier. As baby's ability to find his mouth improves as he will grab the spoon from you! You can let him feed himself and offer larger pieces of soft foods. Yes he will choke and gag sometimes but you need to stand by to make sure that he doesn't harm himself. Most kids if hungry will attack their food. so be careful. cooked carrots in Julienne is fine now and bananas are too.

Go for it, your baby is ready!
Soft foods are best to start off with and once they get the hang of it then you can move to harder foods.

Usually when he/she can hold his/her head up and can sit up, so I say you could go ahead and give the fingerfoods to him/her.
