i believe that it is possible. The two go against eachother, but i believe there is somewhere between the two where I am right now. My mind works this way, two sides, polarity. I have this big logical side of me coexisting with another more creative side that always wants to find something wonderfully unexplainable. The logical side wants to disprove, but often can't, so the other side takes over. It is there, I believe it's there even though I can't prove it.
I don't know if that made any sense to you

Satisfying the needs of the soul automatically satisfies the needs of the body, mind and intelligence also. The reason this works is because we are spiritual, not material (body, mind or intellect) by nature. So nourishing the spirit by knowledge and service to the Supreme Lord will simultaneously satisfy the intelligence and mind and body. We cannot be satisfied by any amount of acquisition of knowledge on the material plane. Our real self requires food just as the gross body requires food. The food for the spirit self is the service of the Supreme. Or as you put it to 'surrender to the wonder'. Yes, we must surrender. Surrender is the first step and then we render service to fulfill His desires, forgetting our selfish material desires. This is practical action for the Supreme, which is on the spiritual plane and thus there are no karmic reactions. The intellectual quest becomes fulfilled because there is no higher use for the intelligence than to engage it in the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. When He is pleased with our devotional service we will automatically be filled with all knowledge of both material and spiritual spheres. No separate endeavor is necessary.

I think the infinite universe has an internal consistency and therefore, if you choose a correct quest it will lead you to a greater life; it can be a spiritual quest or intellectual one. My personal experience shows that no matter which way i use, if I apply the correct 'rules', it leads me to the point, which i had reached choosing the other quest as well, so i think the best way is to combine them; NOT that they lead you to a greater life when they are combined, but to see the perfect consistency and balance in universe which makes you understand that you are on the correct path towards wisdom.

Spiritual quests often require intelligence. They are not mutually exclusive, but does provide the ability to discern or process information in an intelligent manner. Intellectual pursuits often contain spiritual truths, depending on your perspective, but are presented to us in a factual manner relying on scientific data to support it. Therefore, one can enhance the other.
Spiritual quests cannot always be supported by existing data. It becomes more esoterically challenging in nature. We are born with an inherent knowledge, waiting to be tapped into. I liken it to sleeping spirits. Once awakened, they contribute this knowledge to the Whole. It often entails responsibility to their fellow man. All wisdom and intelligence stems from one Source. “If we can think it, it can become.”
When combined, you will still arrive at the same conclusions. It no longer matters how you at arrive at it. This often leads to creativity in nature…combining an expression of the spirit and mind…an often overlooked, and additional aspect to this dimension. One is of the mind and the other is of the soul. When combined, it forms a formidable combination of truth through enlightenment.

When I was a child I would watch the clouds for hours enjoying all the wonders my spirit would find in them.
And I would also ask "why" thousands of times investigating the causes and effects of anything I saw.
Both seemed natural then!
I believe we have known the innumerate secret paths of the nature, long before we were taught the strictly marked roads of humans.

nice way to word your question. like the metaphors, especially. . obviously we need spirit and intellect, because in this world, as youve proven, its easy for one person to break anothers spirit. Therefore, intellect is necessary. only in a utopian society could we rely on spirit alone
