M I S S I N G T H E P O I N T?
Fuel is in money terms is cheap! The cost to the environments is more serious.......
Heres the bit that every one has missed! Its mainly tax, you could run a car on lots of things but it will be taxed, just like petrol..You can run a diesel car on cooking oil but if you do the government have a scheme so that you can self declare your UK tax at the end of the month.
Anything that gets near to harming the balance sheet has to be controlled, drink, stamp duty , etc etc.
There is no way to beat the system long term, but the fun of getting a good head start is worth while!
In the USA you can use natural gas but if you did in the UK and it is possible it wont be long before your added to the scheme!
Our country is expensive to run and guess who has to pay? this is not news , this is how the books balance.
I and other people love electric cars but there are issues, the power stations emit co2 and if they ever take off you will be forced to have a high tax electric socket in your garage. wait and see.. Am I ranting? Sorry!
ps what about browns gas?

I hate to say it but there is really nothing we can do. The politicians get a lot of thier campagne money from the oil comapnies as well as other perks along the way. Bush made a statement that we need to go to alternate fules but has since put a push on to get rid of the Nuclear program, Shut down the solar project and the wind project got it's funding cut ( it is still going by privet donation)in California and while the fedreal and local government praises bio fuels most states have put on higher taxes on them ( ours included) and money for public transport has stayed the same or even been cut in some cases even though it costs more for the fuel ( Some places like ours raised rates our trollys doubled)and people should move to smaller cars and like China mopeds, Bikes and Cycles I also believe that we need to move toward more public transport and every new house should be manditory to have solar cells installed in the roof. .
( $3,000 cost per unit not to bad on a $300,000 home) But nothing will happen till gas is over $6.00 a gallon

Use less fuel.

Without being funny; high fuel prices start to represent the cost of the fuel to the environment. It'll encourage us to travel less, cook economocally, put in better insulation and turn down the heating just a little.

The irritating aspect to the hgh fuels costs is that the profit made by the oil companies goes to the share holders (On the whole) and not invested in renewable fuel sources (Except a token amount), etc.

Ethanol

Ethanol is an alcohol-based alternative fuel produced by fermenting and distilling starch crops that have been converted into simple sugars. Feedstocks for this fuel include corn, barley, and wheat. Ethanol can also be produced from "cellulosic biomass" such as trees and grasses and is called bioethanol. Ethanol is most commonly used to increase octane and improve the emissions quality of gasoline.

Ethanol can be blended with gasoline to create E85, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. E85 and blends with even higher concentrations of ethanol, E95, for example, qualify as alternative fuels under the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct). Vehicles that run on E85 are called flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) and are offered by several vehicle manufacturers. See the ethanol vehicles page for more information on FFVs.

In some areas of the United States, lower concentrations of ethanol are blended with gasoline. The most common low concentration blend is E10 (10% ethanol and 90% gasoline). While it reduces emissions, E10 is not considered an alternative fuel under EPAct regulations. For more information on E10, see the ethanol blends page.

Why be dependent on countries when we can grow our fuel, or a blend of both petroleum and ethanol why go cold turkey! Why are we waiting Brazil uses it for all of its cars. Brazil has better fuel technology than us I know its sad but true.

Or we could start using hydrogen but its going to be more realistic to use ethanol before hydrogen.

If we'd only vote for candidates with policies to lower our dependence on fossil fuels we might get lower petrol prices in the long run. As it is, in my view petrol prices are still to low - look at all the people that still by and drive petrol-guzzling SUVs, all the people that build new houses with no proper heat insulation, buy products with unnecessary plastic wrappings (millions of tons of petrol are wasted like that every year). I do hate the idea though that most of the money ends up on the (Swiss?) bank accounts of the oil barons.

Mid-East political turmoil and insecurity has been cited as the predominant cause of near-term high prices. Longer term, competition from India and China for automobile fuel will maintain high prices.

There aren't many solutions to either problem. If you are seeking a culprit, blame George Bush for contributing to much higher stress levels throughout the Mid-East.

it's all very well for the "greens" to say that people should walk or go on a bike but in lots of cases it is just NOT practical. How do mothers get two or three babies and toddlers on their bikes ? How do you get lots of shopping bags on a bike ? How do people get to work with loads of folders and files when they are on a bike (they arrive at work like a sweaty dog) How do they go out visiting clients in other area when they only have a bike.? We should have a choice in this country (UK) and petrol prices should be lowered so we have the choice. This Gov is too eager to rule our lives and dictate what they think is good for us but mostly it's what's good for their coffers.

How about the president and Vice President take all the money they are making in their stocks from this and giving it to fuel companies so they can charge less. Anyone who likes Bush now is insane.

Stop using petrol based cars.

Start using cars which run on other fuels or the best thing would be to use public transport or cycle to work.
