The number ata the bottom is called a subscript. The one at the top is the superscript. In mathematics, according to one of the seven laws of indices, the number at the bottom would represent the base that the number is in, e.g.base 2 numberswould be like 100101 with a subscript 2 and base three numbers would be like 1022011 with a subscript 3. The 10 is always left out in base 10 because it's understood.

When the number is put at the bottom it is called as subscript. When it is put at the top, it is called as superscript.

In mathematics, superscript implies "power" and subscript implies "base"

10power2= 10 * 10 = 100
10base2=1010

Where you have a series of values in Maths and you want to denote them all by the same letter you label the different values by putting 1,2,3,etc at the bottom of each to show which value you're referring to.

It's a subscript, like an index number.

For example, if you had two values of x, you could label them x1 and x2. (Where the numbers are small subscripts).
