I've got a 40GB Segate HDD in a casing and it's fat32 formatted.
All I need to do is make my portable bootable with WinXP pro. I have
already tried using BartPe to create a PE and tried porting it onto my HDD, but then booting from it failed

{My BIOS supports USB booting)

I actually like to have a reatogo-built XPE(with all bells and whistles),port it to my my HDD and make it bootable. Also can I dual-boot Damn Small Linux(or)some other distro with the same?

Format your portable HDD with a "/s" parameter.

Example on command line: "C:\> format x: /s"

where x is your portable HDD drive.

You can aslo do this by right-clicking the Portable Drive on your My Computer and choose Format. Check "Copy Sytem Files" and click "Format"
