PS: in your opinion are orphans cliché? I seem to meet them in every book I read.

Wow, fantasies are just brimming with clichés!! here are some:
-A lost talisman, like a jewel, a book and most often a sword, that if found would save the world.
-A de-throned king or queen who returns to his rightfull place in the end.
-a quest and a wise person like a wizard or wise-man (or woman) who guides it.
-A lost identity
-of course as you say orphans are definitely a cliche. Y'know, the poor lost soul with no home to return to...
-and the worst cliche of all: war between light and dark, between absolute good and absolute evil (between us - there is no such thing).
-Oh, and an even worse cliche than that: the good guys always win...

Im not sure i understand the context of the question, however i dismay at the stereotypical aliens, of sci fi. the writers of such do not give enough detail into thier character to give the alien some creedance to the aliens evolution, regards lf

If I read one more fantasy book with one more quest I am going to go on a quest myself to cast the author into the fiery depths of Mordor.

Yes...orphans are a cliche. Also the good guy who lost his entire family, and the beautiful chick that helps him.
Lots of cliches...but it just depends, for me, on the way things are written.
