Most people go just on instinct, and so I'm impressed that you're putting thought into this.

There are 3 things to consider:

1. You will occasionally imitate your friend (we all do), so choose a friend who acts like you would like to act. If you want to be outgoing, find someone who is outgoing. If you want to value your school work, find someone who already values school work. (The reverse is also true. If you don't want to do certain things, don't hang out with people who do those things.)

2. You will spend time with your friend, so find someone who enjoys doing some things similar to your pleasures, but also someone who does things you'd like to learn more about.

3. You will have arguments with your friend, so choose someone who seems to use disagreements as a chance to solve problems rather than a reason to hold a grudge.

Best of luck....and enjoy high school.
